"Confirmation is a Catholic sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God's fidelity to us."(AmericanCatholic.org)
Our Requirements
Church law requires that before a Sacrament is administered, the priest must have proof of Baptism. MOQ requires proper proof before a child is able to celebrate the sacraments.
Classes for young people who have not been baptized or who have been baptized, but who have not received some of the sacraments are available. Students who are new to the religious education program and who have not attended religious education classes during the previous year must meet with the Director of Religious Education and may be required to participate in a class which assists them in becoming current with their present grade level.
It is our policy that students preparing for celebrations of sacraments must be in a religious education program or Catholic school for an appropriate time before reception of the sacraments. Students attending for the first time are required to submit a letter from their previous parish to confirm their attendance. Attendance at a Catholic school fulfills this requirement; however, regarding Confirmation, all students who wish to be confirmed must attend immediate preparation classes and fulfill any requirements that are a part of that preparation.
Sponsors
Sponsors for Confirmation must be at least 16 years of age, must be confirmed, and a Catholic in good standing. The MOQ Confirmation Program requires a statement from the sponsor stating that they accept the role of sponsor, to be a responsible role model and example of faith, a person committed to their Catholic Faith, one who attends and participates in Sunday Mass, receiving the Eucharist as often as possible and Penance as necessary, not married outside the church or otherwise compromised in their own sacramental life, a person witnessing to the values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, being open to the Word of God as revealed in Sacred Scripture and taught by the Church and by seeking to be a service to others for love of Him.
Also a Statement of a priest that will verify that the sponsor is a registered member of a parish and to the best of his knowledge completed the sacraments of initiation in the Catholic Church, is in good standing with the Church, is faithful in attending Mass and in the practice of the Catholic faith, and is worthy to accept the responsibility of being a Sponsor. This documentation sheet will be provided to each Confirmation sponsor.
