This Lenten season I am challenging the youth to think about someone else other than themselves. Some of the things we have talked about are simply smiling at someone passing by, holding a door open, sending a friendly note, or doing some other sort of service for someone else. I would like to encourage you to try to do the same for the remainder of Lent. 🙂
I decided to partake in this challenge as well; so far I have found this to be one of the easier challenges that I have given the youth to do over the course of this year. While babysitting the other day I was asked by one of the kids what I gave up for Lent, my response was that I wasn’t giving up anything but that I was going to take time to do more things for others. I was told “you can’t do that; you have to give something up.” While giving something up for the duration of Lent would be easy I wanted something that was going to challenge me every day! I think many kids are so stuck in that mind set of you have to always give something up for Lent and that is the only option available. This was why my challenge for the Youth Group members was going to challenge them in a different way.
So many times has it been thrown in my face that Millennial’s and younger generations are going to be the end of us.. But why? Maybe it’s because we aren’t taking enough time to develop these youth, our future, into the exceptional human beings God has made them to be. Or maybe it’s because they have to learn things for themselves. I don’t have kids now but being a Millennial I am sick of the bad street cred we are all given, due to the actions of few, and would like to change the older generations mind about those youngsters. I want to take these superb youth of our parish and help become the exceptional human beings I know they can all be. Next time you see someone in a younger generation stop and say something nice or positive to them so they have the hope that they need to better our country, because they are our future. Let’s be positive and show these youth that they can break free from the stereotypes they have been given.
We are doing a Youth Group service project that we are hoping to get our whole parish involved in. This is something that the kids are excited about and I wanted to share that with you all in ho0pes that you would be willing to lend a hand or even some words of advice. I would love it if you all to help this younger generation learn what it is like to be a good person who thinks of others, not just because of a challenge but because they want to be a better person. They want to be a role model for younger children to look up to. I am hoping you all will join me on this journey to help make the youth of this parish the sons and daughters of Christ they were born to be.
